PROGRAMME

Science and technology continue to transform our modern world, impacting our lives from the way we work to the way we communicate to the way we are entertained. So it is crucial for the future of humanity that science and technology receive in depth and critical journalistic coverage of the highest quality. The 11th World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ2019) is designed to strengthen the professional, ethical and technical skills of science journalists by increasing their knowledge of recent developments in science and improving their understanding of the forces that shape our world.

WCSJ2019 will be independent and critical. Science has never been a more powerful influence on society. As global forces strive to deform science to serve their agendas, journalists need to remain constantly skeptical and accurate. The WCSJ2019 programme includes keynote speakers, workshops, panel discussions, and sessions that will help journalists navigate science and technology information, increase their science knowledge and improve their reporting and critical thinking skills.

WCSJ2019 is open and innovative. New ideas and new practices are constantly emerging, and the conference will strive to bring the very best to Lausanne. To do this, the organizing committee will be seeking input right up to the last minute before the conference, not only from established experts and organizations but also from innovators in a variety of fields.

WCSJ2019 thinks positively. Times may be challenging, but along with challenge comes unprecedented opportunity. Never has such a variety of tools been available to tell stories in an attractive way, to access information and data, to verify facts. Nor have there been so many ways to interact with audiences, measure the impact of stories, and improve journalistic work accordingly. This conference will allow us to discuss creative and impactful ways of taking advantage of this journalistic bonanza.

The Lake Geneva Region is rich in science, and WCSJ2019 will make the most of the opportunities that it offers. From public institutions including CERN, the UN, the WHO, the WWF, IUCN and the Gavi Alliance to private actors like Novartis, ABB and Logitech, the opportunities for science journalists are everywhere, providing a strong argument for potential participants to secure their editors’ permission to attend.

WCSJ2019 will reach out to the local population. To do this, the conference partners with other science communication events, such as the Neuchâtel International Fantastic (Science-Fiction) Film Festival, which takes place the same week, and the CinéGlobe science documentary festival at CERN. These opportunities will put the spotlight on science journalists and the crucial role they play in society.
