Hilda Bastian was a long-time consumer advocate in Australia, whose career turned to analyzing evidence, communicating about it, and working to make it more accessible. She is currently studying issues affecting the validity of systematic reviews. Hilda previously worked for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the US, in the National Library of Medicine (NLM). She arrived at the NIH in 2011, after seven years helping establish IQWiG, a national health technology agency in Germany. There, Hilda was the head of its Department of Health Information, assessing evidence and communicating it to the public bilingually. In the 1990s, she helped establish the Cochrane Collaboration, founding and leading its Consumer Network for over a decade, and creating the plain language summary system for Cochrane reviews. She was also the first lead scientific editor for Cochrane’s Consumer and Communication Review Group.
